*I really wanted to do this song without footnotes, because I feel like its one of Gainsbourgs most personal. It gets me a little weepy, in any case. Blanc as an adjective in French can be used in a lot of places to kind of mean `uninitiated.' A `white voice' usually means a flat or emotionless one, which can't be the case here. It also is the kind of voice one uses after a shock or a fright. . . hence my choice of cracked.
